“Gloves for Garbage” is the opening track from Hubba Bubba, the debut album by Damaged Bug, the new solo project of John Dwyer, leader of Thee Oh Sees. The cover artwork is really similar to the cover of Silver Apples’ 1969 Contact, and for a reason: Dwyer’s album is a quirky, garagey psychedelic pop record combining the raw, fried catchiness of Thee Oh Sees with the skeletal, early synth works of Silver Apples. Built around a simple, killer riff and the relentless sine wave pulsations, “Gloves” is a straight-up trippy killer, with just the right amount of disconnection from reality. If you’ve ever wondered what Portishead would be like if they went for happy songs instead of sad ones, check out Hubba Bubba. Stream the whole album here. Released on Castle Face Records.
