Westerbur & Rowe – 2015

[ Northern Ashram, 2016 ]

With a cover like that and a label named Northern Ashram you know you’re into a trip, even if you don’t know what the record contains. The Detroit duo Westerbur & Rowe brings some serious Berlin vibes to the former American motor empire city, mixing jazzy percussion workouts with shimmering drones and slo-mo arpeggios ringing among the retrofuturistic architecture. It’s almost like a re-imagining of the soundtrack to Robocop, with some more Tarkovsky thrown in with his long takes of destroyed nature and brutalist tower blocks that would be set to this album: two sprawling, side-long vistas filled with soft-industrial rhythms and a Carpenterian mood building. An intriguing listen. Recommended!
